Dry battery electrode manufacturing has a screening problem: identifying which powder formulations deliver the electrical performance you need across the whole densification range the material will actually see, not at one arbitrary density.

Conductivity rises with packing fraction, because compaction multiplies the contacts between particles. That relationship matters most in dry coating, where densification happens in the calender gap. A single conductivity value, measured once, says very little about what the electrode will do.

This presentation introduces a method that measures powder electrical conductivity and tapped density in one automated workflow, on the GranuPack with its Conductivity Unit. Conductivity is recorded after each tap as the powder densifies, so it can be followed across packing fractions, a direct reading of how the conductive network forms and how efficient it is. Results will be shown for formulations differing in composition, conductive additive strategy and degree of fibrillation, and the curves separate clearly between them.

The practical consequence is screening speed: formulations can be compared and additive strategies ranked before committing to pilot-scale processing.

Meet Roozbeh in Braunschweig

Granutools will have a booth for the two days, with the GranuPack and its Conductivity Unit running, the instrument behind the presentation. Come and watch a measurement run: conductivity and tapped density recorded tap after tap, on real material.

Roozbeh will also be available to discuss powder flowability, packing behaviour and electrostatic charging in electrode manufacturing, from raw material selection through to scale-up.

Going further

The method is described in detail in our application note, Measuring powder electrical conductivity with GranuPack, with results on sulfur/carbon black composites, LFP and graphite blends, pure carbon black and model glass bead systems, conductivity rising by several orders of magnitude with densification in some cases.
