Oral Presentation - Characterization of Spreadability of Metal Powders for Additive Manufacturing

In powder-bed-based AM processes, the spreadability of powders, i.e., their ability to form smooth, homogeneous layers, is a critical factor in ensuring part quality. In this presentation, Salvatore Pillitteri will demonstrate how powder cohesiveness, measured using the Cohesive Index (GranuDrum), correlates with the quality of powder layers formed during recoating. The study reveals a strong agreement between the Cohesive Index and the observed fluctuations in powder bed layers, offering a predictive approach to optimize spreadability and improve production efficiency.
This work underscores the importance of advanced characterization tools in enhancing AM process reliability and opens new pathways for standardizing spreadability evaluation.
