The importance of granular materials

After water, granular materials are the most manipulated material in industry. The examples are countless: sand and cement for construction, cereals and many other bio-powders in the food industry, ores in the mining industry, powders in the pharmaceutical industry, …

Due to friction and inelastic collisions at the contact between the grains, the manipulation of granular materials inexorably dissipate energy. So, a small process optimization can save a lot of energy with a significant ecological impact.

Understanding Granular Dynamics with the GranuDrum

In this paper, we show how the rotating drum geometry can be used to characterize the flowing properties of granular materials and powders in low consolidation conditions. In particular, we focus on the GranuDrum instrument, which has been developed with a fundamental physical approach and is available commercially.

With this instrument, the flowing properties are measured with image analysis and dedicated algorithms has been developed to extract a set of parameters giving a complete picture of the flowing behavior.
